HISTORY

Portland & Upper Mount Bethel EMS started 53 years ago with the idea that the community’s along both sides of the Delaware River needed an Ambulance Corp to assist the people with their medical & transportation needs.

So in May of 1954 the Members of The Lions Club from Knowlton Township, Portland Borough, & Mount Bethel Township got together and formed Portland & Vicinity Ambulance Corps.

The newly formed Ambulance Corp. would serve the communities of Knowlton Township, Portland Borough, Upper Mount Bethel Township, Delaware Water Gap with the help of Volunteers. Portland’s first call was in May of 1955. Over the years the Corp’s conducted fund raising for equipment, recruited Volunteers, trained them in First Aid, Rescue Diving, Vehicle Rescue. With 35 - 50 volunteers strong in the old days, the Corp€™s continued to grow and serve the community with a spirit of Love for their job, an a deep desire to help their family, friends and neighbors.

Portland & Vicinity Volunteer Ambulance Corp’s has since changed their name to reflect their current coverage area. Now called Portland & Upper Mount Bethel EMS, we continue to serve the community with the same Love of the Job and deep desire to help their family, friends & neighbors as their predecessors did 50 years ago. Portland & Upper Mount Bethel EMS currently operates with 5 Volunteers and 6 Paid Employees.
